Physiatrists care for a wide spectrum of problems, ranging from the treatment of a sore shoulder or back to the management of a spinal cord injury. The focus of treatment is on restoring function to enhance quality of life. Physiatrists are in charge of the overall treatment program and will work closely with a full team of healthcare professionals: physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, case management social workers, prosthetists and orthotists. Treatment may include outpatient care, admission to the rehabilitation hospital or unit, or referral for home therapy.
